Who We Are
Sister Rose Wangui, a Kenyan nun, came to the
United States in 2000 to join the Sisters of
the Visitation in their Washington, D.C. monastery. Unable
to leave her people behind, Sr. Rose shared
their needs with those around her. A committed
group of Washington-based benefactors adopted
Sr. Rose's dream of providing clean water, improving
health care, and creating educational opportunities. In
2003, the Mercy Center Foundation USA, with
501c3 nonprofit status, was established.
Mercy Center Foundation USA’s (MCF USA) primary focus is the development of Mercy Center Lare, a community center in the heart of Lare, Kenya. MCF USA has provided guidance and financial support in all aspects to the local board of Kenyans who supervise the project in Lare. This site now consists of a well, medical dispensary and guest house. Staff housing will be available by January, 2009. Future plans include a secondary school and micro-enterprise opportunities.
Mercy Center Foundation USA is also actively engaged in exploring partnerships with organizations that share the same vision and commitment and are willing to offer expertise in areas of health care, water sanitation and delivery, education and community outreach.
