Mercy Center Timeline

Located just 40 kilometers from Nakuru, the third largest city in Kenya, Lare remains an isolated community of 40,000 subsistence farmers lacking the most essential services: electricity, clean water, roads.  Limited access to educational opportunities and healthcare perpetuate a cycle of poverty and diseases.  Mercy Center Foundation, USA (MCF USA) and its Kenayn partner, Mercy Center Lare (MCL) are working together so that the people of Lare can become a self-reliant community.

2009

Fr. Huruma Club Water Kiosk  
Fr. Evanson Njogu, NCL President, traveled to the USA to raise funds and build awareness of Mercy Center Foundation  Huruma Club is founded by students at Georgetown Visitation.  They raised enough money to fund construction of a playground at the Mercy Center Clinic. Water kiosk is established on the perimeter of our property increasing access to clean water from Forte’s Well.

Laboratory fully functional and powered by solar panels.

Mobile health clinic program begins.

2008

Timeline First Baby Born Timeline Timeline
MCL distributes blankets and food to victims of political clashes in community. First baby born in clinic:  A boy born to a Kalinjin father and Kikuyu mother in midst of political clashes. Weekly Childhood Immunization Program initiated.  Approximately 60 infants vaccinated each month. Nutritional Counseling becomes available.

MCF USA and MCL Board members engage in on site strategic planning sessions.  Meetings held with accountant and insurance agents

Weekly Prenatal Maternal Health Program initiated.

Infant nutritional supplement program begun with funds from Victims' Rights International. Dispensary has treated over 9,200 patients.  25% are children under five and 25% are women of childbearing age.

2007

20 Foot Container arrives with donated medical supplies and equipment from Crosslink International Rose House completed to accommodate up to 20 volunteers. Dispensary treats over 5,000 people in first year of operation. Road repair completed with funds from Gregory Wims, founder of Victims' Rights Foundation.

2006

Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine / International Christian Resources conduct second health camp and provide basic health care to 900 people.

Second delegation from MCF USA visits. Crosslink International and George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC donate medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. Victims' Rights Foundation donates $8,500 in food for victims of famine in community.

MCL Dispensary officially opens to the public with a full time staff of five. Vehicle purchased to serve as ambulance and mobile clinic. First International Board meeting with representatives from MCL and MCF USA.  

2005

Timeline Knights of Malta Donation Providing Health Care  
First official visit by Mercy Center Foundation, USA Board of Directors Knights of Malta provide $10,000 towards purchase of medical supplies for clinic.  Health Camp hosted by Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine/ International Christian Resources provides basic health care to hundreds of people.  

2004

Purchased Land Timeline    
Purchase of additional five acres of land adjacent to existing property. MCL Dispensary completed with funds from Loyola Foundation, Albert Forte and private donors.          

2003

2002

Timeline Five-acre parcel of land    
'Mercy Center Lare' established by Sr. Rose Wangui. VHM with help from Kenyan friends as an official 'self-help' organization with Kenyan Ministry of Social Services.  Five acres of land purchased with funds from Visitation of Holy Mary Monastery in St. Louis, MO in the heart of Lare, Kenya.
