Medical Volunteers
Humanitarian Aid
In 2005 and 2006, International Christian Resources, a non-profit relief organization, coordinated two health camps at the site. The ICR team included doctors, nurses, students from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and lay volunteers with donated medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. Over four days, hundreds of people were treated and provided with free medicine. For many of the people, this was their first health exam. For all of the community, this was their first experience with caring, experienced medical professionals. Infants, toddlers, adolescents, adults and entire families were welcomed.
Medical Assessments
As the days wore on, the health needs of the Lare community were exposed. Patients presented with worms, coughs, colds, malaria, typhoid, scarlet fever, malnutrition, dehydration, scabies, tinea capitis, conjunctivitis, cataracts, and eye tumors but the overwhelming majority sought care for wound and systemic infections. One case of tuberculosis and several cases of cancer were also diagnosed. Had ICR not been there to offer treatment and antibiotics, certainly some of these people could have died.
Volunteer Opportunities
We openly extend the invitation to other organizations that have the heart and resources to partner with us in providing additional health camps for this community. Our guest house can accommodate up to 20 overnight guests and overflow lodging is available in Nakuru. The community is in critical need of specialty health camps for infant and child health, community health education and dental care. Please contact us.
