Education
Although the establishment of a school was part of our original mission, access to clean water and medical care were given first priority. Now that Forte’s Well provides clean water to hundreds of people a day in the dry season and thousands of patients have been treated at the Mercy Center Clinic, the Mercy Center Foundation is entering the early planning stages for the education phase of site development.
It was announced at our 2009 Annual Gala that a scholarship fund had been created to provide scholarships for needy but deserving young women of Lare. These funds would allow the eight students to attend boarding school for four years. Selection criteria and procedures were established; potential candidates were fairly vetted. Currently, seven young women and one young man are enrolled in secondary school.
